Shanta Bryant Gyan, president of SBG Communications, has more than fifteen years of experience in media outreach and editorial work in the fields of international advocacy and humanitarian and development with a focus on the developing world. Ms. Gyan is currently operating a dynamic communications consultancy, based in the New York City area.
SBG Communications offers innovative and strategic communications consulting services to international organizations on a broad range of pressing global issues to heighten public awareness and influence public policy. Her work has garnered press coverage in major U.S. and international media outlets, including the New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, National Public Radio and BBC, among others.
With a background in international development and public policy, Ms. Gyan writes and develops resources on global issues, such as advocacy guides, policy briefings, manuals and marketing materials. She also has extensive experience in web, newsletter, newspaper, and magazine writing and editing.
Launching her career as a reporter for the All Africa News Service, a Nairobi- based continental African newswire service, Ms. Gyan covered the continent as the wave of multiparty democracy spread across Africa in the early 1990s. Ms. Gyan also reported on the beginning stages of the AIDS epidemic in Africa, in addition to the drought and other environmental crises that were crippling Eastern and Southern Africa.
In the United States, Ms. Gyan has worked with leading international organizations to bolster communications and media outreach efforts to increase coverage and help shape the media’s reporting on emerging markets, particularly Africa.
She serves as the Communications Director consultant for the Initiative for Global Development (IGD), a U.S.-based network of African and global business leaders who are committed to inclusive growth through business investment. In that capacity, she oversees all IGD’s communications efforts, and works closely with IGD leadership to design and execute dynamic communications and media strategies to enhance and heighten awareness of its brand and work.
Her consulting work with The Africa-America Institute (AAI), a U.S.-based international education organization, has helped to re-brand and raise the profile of the Africa-focused organization in international media and with key audiences.
As publicist for the documentary, “Africa: Open for Business” and “Africa Investment Horizon”, she generated successful media placements on CNN, The Economist, National Public Radio, and African media outlets, to showcase the tremendous investment and business opportunities on the African continent to international audiences.
Ms. Gyan served as the Director of Communications and Media Relations at InterAction, the largest alliance of U.S.-based international relief and development organizations. In that capacity, she spearheaded outreach to the media during humanitarian crises in hot spots such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Democratic Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe. She also organized media trainings for communications officers at member organizations and forums with top American and international journalists. Additionally, she was chief editor and writer for Monday Developments, a biweekly publication of international humanitarian and development issues.
She was the Director of Communications for GBCS, an international faith-based public policy organization in Washington, which advocates on issues ranging from international debt relief and climate change to welfare reform and social justice on Capitol Hill and the United Nations.
Ms. Gyan received a B.S. in journalism from Boston University and has pursued graduate studies in International Communications at The American University in Washington, D.C.
